Getting to Chinatown Madrid doesn’t require taking the metro. Following Variant 2 of the AM4 route from the city’s Anda Madrid programme, the neighbourhood is a 95-minute walk from Puerta del Sol, along a continuous route with no significant uphill sections in the final stretch.
The route
- Puerta del Sol — starting point.
- Neptuno — along Paseo del Prado.
- Atocha — it’s worth going inside the station to see its tropical garden.
- Railway Museum — located in the former Delicias railway station.
- Madrid Río (Matadero) — a good place to take a longer break.
- Usera Chinatown — 20 minutes and 1.3 km from Matadero
On arrival
The end of the route is also the beginning of the experience: Dolores Barranco Street and the surrounding area are home to restaurants, bakeries and pastry shops, Asian supermarkets, tea houses and specialist stores. Many of them are part of the Chinatown Madrid Tourism Quality Distinction programme, which recognises establishments committed to service quality, accessibility and sustainability.
Recommendations
- Best in the mid-afternoon: you’ll arrive in Chinatown in time for dinner.
- Comfortable shoes and water: in summer, avoid the hottest hours of the day.
- The return journey is easy by metro (Line 6, Usera and Plaza Elíptica stations).
